Fiber Optic Resources for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math Teachers
STEM or STEAM – science, technology, engineering, arts and math – is the key to future success for everyone, especially students in schools today.
It’s our goal to introduce you, and help you to introduce your students, to the technology that makes much of the technology we use today possible – fiber optic communications – and show the STEAM topics related to it, including the arts – and make it entertaining and fun.
What’s “Fiber Optics”
Fiber optics is the primary medium we use to communicate today. Phones, landline or wireless, the Internet and cable TV all communicate on fiber optic cables. Even when you are using your cell phone, it’s not connected with a fiber optic cable, but the cell tower it’s connected to probably is.
Fiber optics carries signals as pulses of light while copper cables carry signals as pulses of electrons. As the photo below by AT&T from the 1970s showed, one hair-thin fiber can carry more signals than the giant copper telephone cable in the photo. Today’s fibers can carry millions of times the data that that fiber could 40 years ago!

BC Ministry of Transport: Fibre Reference Guide
Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineering Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (First Edition 2019)
Fibre optic cable is becoming a crucial component for public agencies and many are deciding their own fibre networks are the right direction. Installing, operating and maintaining a fibre network is relatively new to the public sector and there is increasing demand for the sharing of knowledge and experience so that the benefits of a fibre network can be realized efficiently and effectively.
The purpose of these guidelines is to assist public agencies as they begin or continue to develop their fibre optic cable programs and to create a shared understanding with consistency to help facilitate sharing agreements among agencies The guidelines cover a variety of topics that include both the technical and business side of a fibre optic network, agreements with other organization and range from before the network to after it has been installed.
This manual is also intended to be a living document, so feedback and comments are welcome for further editions.

How To Build Rural Broadband, Learning From History
You can spend hours reading about the lack of broadband in rural America
You can spend hours reading about the lack of broadband in rural America. Here are two recent examples from the FCC and The Verge. But while AT&T CEO John Stankey told Wall St. analysts that he doesn’t think there is any way to extend fiber to rural areas at all, FOA has worked with dozens of groups wanting to build rural broadband and documented several DIY FTTH systems in the FOA Guide. We have also documented in the FOA Newsletter (June 2021) ways that make rural broadband more feasible using new technologies like remote OLTs for GPON networks.
As we continue to research rural broadband strategies and technologies, we continue to work on other projects. One of those projects involves assisting EPRI (the Electric Power Research Institute, the electrical utilities “Bell Labs” or “Telcordia”) with their strategic plans for fiber optics in their networks. It occurred to us that installing rural fiber networks was similar to the development of rural electrical networks in America a century ago.
